South Island top place in the world to visit

Waipounamu, island, the bigger and southernmost of the two head islands of New Zealand, in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. South Island is isolated from North Island toward the north by Cook Strait and from Stewart Island toward the south by Foveaux Strait.


Sloping landscape possesses very nearly 3/4 of South Island, with a focal mountain chain, the Southern Alps, moving southwest to upper east and coming full circle at Mount Cook (12,316 feet [3,754 metres]). The Southern Alps separate the limited waterfront piece of the Westland Plain (west) from the expansive Canterbury Plains (east). Fiordland National Park in the southwest is a particular region with its various beach front fjords (gulfs) and high lakes.


The recreation area is essential for the Te Wahipounamu (South West New Zealand) area of safeguarded wild along the west side of the island that was assigned an UNESCO World Heritage site in 1990. Likewise, five island bunches off the southern coast (the Snares, Bounty Islands, Antipodes Islands, Auckland Islands, and Campbell Islands), which make up the New Zealand Subantarctic Islands, were named a different universe Heritage site in 1998.
